Windowsphonehacker team once again successfully created a successor of Folders for Windows Phone with on-device implementation capability. The previous version was a PC version, which happens to work with both marketplace and homebrew apps alike. With the release of Folders for on-device, WP users are now in the league of iPhone and Android users.
Folders concept is not new, but this is what we missed a lot as a WP fan. As a matter of fact, many of us have been patiently waiting for the release of such functionality. Now the release of Folders for Windows Phone on-device app gives us a huge sigh of relief, as this gives us more liberty, and we can proudly say that we’re on par with iDevice and Android users.
This month turns out to be one of the most fruitful, as we witnessed some of the impressive development in WP homebrew community. Earlier yesterday, we covered a news on Deepshining v7 with the integration of new marketplace which brought a new hope that we’re on the verge of witnessing something amazing in very near future.
On-Device Folders for WP
Although, the on-device folder app looks great, it comes with few limitations. Users can not install homebrew application using this application, you’ve to use Folder for Windows Phone PC version instead. Of course, this is a good start and we may or may not get such functionality in near future. Fortunately, it works on developers unlocked device (no need of Interop unlock), so users of chevronWP7 can enjoy using this application.
Before using on-device folder application you’ve to make sure that the application you’re going to add to Folder pre-installed on your device. Unfortunately, due to few restrictions like no root access to \Applications\Install folder, it is impossible to enumerate which application is already installed on your device, hence you’ve to manually check your device for the presence of the application.
Let’s narrate the features of On-Device Folders
- Create unlimited folders to pin to the start screen
- Completely custom grouping
- Configure directly from your phone
- Search marketplace easily
- Add shortcuts to WiFi, Bluetooth and other system settings easily
- Customize the color of Folders background
Windowsphonehacker team is the same team who also created WindowBreak – a free alternative of chevronWP7 to jailbreak Windows Phone– for Samsung devices. There are two different on-device branch, one installs like normal application and second one gets installed under settings menu instead of apps list.

Those who are still looking to install homebrew app in Folders should use the desktop version, which is still supported and will always be. Check out the video after the break
