Inspiring Thought: Windows Phone 7 Folders or Tile Collection Concept

Rumors July 19th, 2011 / 1 Comment

Mark had suggested ‘Folder’ or ‘Tile Collections’ option in Windows Phone 7 last week. Yesterday, we provided an insight about a new concept called resizable or small tile option to get rid of infinite scrolling. Moreover it gives a better way to organize tiles according to need. How about having a folder or say Tile Collection concept?

Android and iOS already provides a Folder option where you can group all the applications or programs into a single folder according to their functionality, use or other means. Shockingly, Windows Phone 7 is missing such option. Moreover having a limit of 300 tiles on home screen may put you in a trouble in case you use your WP7 device a lot. BBC News app for mango already provides an option of ‘pinned feed’ which shows up on home screen as a tile when applied. We will eventually run out of tiles if we keep adding tiles on home screen.

WP7 Folders option

Folder concept in WP7 would be a nice option to organize all the programs on homepage. Organizing program(s) in a folder makes home screen more informative and needless to say clutter less. This would be a welcome move in Microsoft implements it in a next major update.

WPCentral has provided some interesting images to make the concept more clear. It would be interesting to see this concept taking shape in reality. Microsoft WP7 developers, are you listening? iOS already provides a simple drag and drop feature to create folder.

Would you like to see Folder concept in Windows Phone 7 too?

How to Use Windows Phone 7 as Portable USB Drive

Tutorial July 19th, 2011 / 2 Comments

Wouldn’t it be great to use your Windows Phone 7 as a portable USB drive, rather then carrying a USB flash drive along with you? Yes, I know the same question has already been aroused in mind of many WP7 owners, but there is no way you can achieve this until now. Most of the WP7 handsets has several gigabytes worth of storage capacity but there is no way you can access them directly from your PC.

M. Daou has been digging into the Windows registry file to find out the solution. Luckily, he found out a nifty trick to use Windows Phone 7 (WP7) as a portable USB drive. This simple to follow registry tweak will let you use your WP7 device as USB drive or memory card. No need to carry a separate flash drive when you already have your WP7 handset with you. Follow the below steps carefully.

Note: Remember to back up your registry before making any changes to it.

Use WP7 as Portable USB Flash Drive

You need to have Windows Phone 7 device and Zune installed to your PC. You should also connect your WP7 device to Zune once before using this registry tweak. Make sure your Windows Phone is not plugged in when you apply this steps.

Step 1: Open Windows Registry Editor

  • Go to Start->Run and type regedit

Step 2: Navigate to following location

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSB then press Ctrl+F to search ZuneDriver

You should see something like below (click on the screenshot for larger preview)

use windows phone 7 as usb drive

Step 3: Look for VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00 folder. You might find multiple subfolders under this folder in case if you’ve multiple WP7 devices connected to Zune. There is no direct way to tell which device belongs to which subfolder entry. In most of the case you’ll be using only one device.

Edit the following entries shown in right pane of Registry Editor Window

  • ShowInShell: 0 to 1 <- it will display device content in  Windows Explorer
  • PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell: 1 to 0
  • EnableLegacySupport: 0 to 1 <- this will enable Windows Explorer to detect connected device

That’s it. Next time whenever you plug-in your Windows Phone 7 to your PC, it will show it in a Windows Explorer (Zune software will also display the connected device as usual).

use windows phone 7 as usb drive

You should understand that this registry tweak only allows you to access Zune storage part of Windows Phone 7. There are few restrictions using the above registry hack. Although you can use your WP7 device as a portable USB drive, you will not be able to make documents work on your Windows Phone. There is no access to Office storage folder so copy pasting word, pdf or other office documents to folders like video will not help much.

Let us know whether this tweak worked for you or not?

Record Windows Phone 7 Screen with ‘WP7 Screen RecX’ [Homebrew]

Homebrew July 18th, 2011 / No Comments

XDA developer fiinix has released a WP7 Screen RecX program that can record Windows Phone 7 screen. For those who are looking to record your screen for presentation or any other reason should grab this utility. He has improvised DllImport project to make it work better. He has done lots of code optimization since the initial release.

WP7 Screen RecX is a nifty utility that gives you high quality recording facility. Both XAP and EXE files are bundled together in beta release. Here are some of the features of the program

  • Full screen mode using “F11”
  • Presentation-mode background color chooser
  • Chose what IP port WP7<>Server talk over
  • Start/stop server at any time to continue
  • 4 fps available at this time

WP7 Screen RecX works both wirelessly and with cable. However, cable free depends on Wi-Fi latency for FPS. Currently, this is in beta version so you may encounter few bugs and lags. Here is a video demo of the program as well. The program is still in beta mode and early stage of development. Expect it to be much more efficient. Currently, it doesn’t work on Mango enabled devices.

Inspiring thought: Smaller Tile Concept in Windows Phone

News July 18th, 2011 / No Comments

Windows Phone Mango update promises some great feature like live tiles but it limits the tile to 30. Imagine the scenario when you have to install lots of apps, game and links to home screen for easy navigation. For example have a look at the BBC News mobile mango app which utilizes the live feed pinned feature to add feeds instantly on home screen. However having a restriction of 300 tile on home screen makes it difficult for the user to add more tiles on the home screen. Moreover it eats up lots of space which makes it difficult to navigate all the tiles. Wouldn’t it be great if we can access tile without infinite scrolling?

Smaller or resizable Windows Phone Tile concept

XDA member has come up with an interesting idea of smaller tile size. He has gone further explaining the juicy side of resizing the tiles in 1/2 or 1/4 to make the home screen clutter free (?) and more intuitive to make the maximum use of available home screen space. What if you can split the tile in half or 1/4th to add links to games, IE9,inbox,,webpages,rss feed etc.

I hope Microsoft listen to this concept and implement it in next update. Who says WP7 developers are not better than iOS developer? Personally, I like the idea besides it makes the home screen more cluttered with too many tiles, but on the other hand we can utilize the home screen in more efficient way. What’s you say on this?
